Who doesn't love travelling in August? Yes, we admit sometimes there are places in the world that get a little hectic. But on the whole, if you choose wisely, you're bound to have an exceptional time.
We’ve put together some of the best places to travel in August. For this post, you better believe you’re about to be spoilt for choice…
Let’s get started.
1. Bolivia
City Recommendation: La Paz
NomadList Rating: 3.34/5
Stunningly beautiful, perfectly unpredictable, and not so well travelled that you feel trapped in a sea of tourists. Bolivia is the place to consider if you’re looking to take your adventure life up an extra notch.
It’s not for the faint of heart, mind you, but you can expect your adrenaline levels to be through the roof as you quad bike along ‘Death Road’. Look out for the gorgeous alpacas and the puppies everywhere as you enjoy the wonderful scenery.
For digital nomads, if you know where to look you can find internet that’ll keep you doing well workwise but having said that, Bolivia is a perfect place to complete a ‘digital detox’; there’s nothing like uninterrupted adventure to help reset your mind and engage with the idea of ‘active rest’.
Top 5 Bucketlist Items
- Salar De Uyuni Salt Flats
- Take and ATV down the ‘Death Road’
- Sail Lake Titicaca
- Take a 3 day Trek into the Jungle
- Rent a Jeep to climb Mount Illimani

2. Scotland
City Recommendation: Edinburgh
NomadList Rating: 2.97/5
In August, Scotland is in its prime. I know you’ve been watching the Amazon Prime series Outlander...yeah me too. August is the perfect time to see the beauty of the ancient Highland landscape. It’s hilly, it’s green and there are castles everywhere!
Here you can expect to have a wonderful time in a land that’s full of history and bursting with stories. The Scottish people are warm and welcoming with a sense of humour so outrageous you’ll be sobbing with laughter like you’ve known them all your life.
August-time is also festival time; see if you can get yourself to the beautiful city of Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival* for a day...or a month celebrating the arts. Anywhere in Scotland, you should be able to get yourself a stiff drink but make sure you do a whisky tour to show yourself approved.
For digital nomads...it’s the UK. You’ll pretty much be able to work from anywhere unless you lose yourself completely in the wonder and mystery of The Highlands. Cost of living will vary but ask a local to help you find the best eats for cheap in the area if you’re looking to keep a tight rein on the budget.
*Note : Fringe Festival has been cancelled for 2020 due to the COVID-19*
Top 5 Bucketlist Items
- Fringe Festival
- Visit Edinburgh Castle
- Climb Arthur’s Seat
- Walk through the Royal Botanic Garden
- Walk the halls of Holyrood Palace

3. New Zealand
City Recommendation: Christchurch
NomadList Rating: 3.35/5
A landscape so epic, we keep recording it and putting it in films, adverts and television programmes. We are OBSESSED with the completely stunning New Zealand.
Truth be told, New Zealand can take our money any time of the year but this location is a stunning spot to travel in August - the adventure potential is limitless. You can hike the different trails, you can go on a road trip, you can visit your favourite film sets or just enjoy the beautiful cities. If you’re looking for a bit of skiiing in August instead of roasting like a chicken in Europe, here is the place for you.
For digital nomads, one thing to note is that the cost of living is quite high so make sure you have your coins in order and a plan in hand to keep that budget under control if that’s what’s important to you. You’ll need to choose the city wisely; New Zealand is a costly place to live and you want to make sure you can get decent WiFi to work. We think that Christchurch is a great city to start in because it’s a little quirky and there’s an up-and-coming coworking scene. There are also lots of free WiFi spots and the quality of life overall is said to be really nice.
Here’s some things we’d definitely want to do whilst there…
Top 5 Bucketlist
- Go Skydiving
- Visit the Botanical Gardens
- Fly a Helicopter!
- Go Skiing on Mt Hutt
- Lord of the Rings Film Set Tour…(just me? Okay then…)

4. United States
City Recommendation: Chicago
NomadList Rating: 3.1/5
If you’re planning to head over to the States, Chicago definitely deserves a look. This artsy, soulful city has so much going on, you’ll never be bored.
I’m British so of course I’m going to make some observations about the weather; you’ll be pleased to know that it’s wonderfully fresh. You’re not going to necessarily be walking round in a vest top and shorts, but you won’t be wrapped up like a bag lady either. It’s the perfect time to really get out there and explore.
Chicago city has loads of cultural events, sporting events, food and beverage events...the variety is endless. Go and see a game, go for bottomless brunch...curate a bucketlist that’s as unique as you are.
For digital nomads, being here is a breeze in terms of finding good WiFi and great places to work. The city experience is a great one that’s really uplifted by the diversity of the community and the experiences you’re bound to have. It’s not cheap but it’ll definitely be worth it. Be sure to talk to a local who’ll be able to tell you which areas to avoid.
Top 5 Bucketlist
- Eat Pizza
- Visit Millennium Park
- Street Art Tour
- Visit Garfield Park Conservatory
- Go to a Jazz Club

5. Serbia
City Recommendation: Belgrade
NomadList Rating: 3.89/5
Belgrade is fast becoming a digital nomad favourite. Beautiful cobbled streets, that feeling that you’ve stepped back in time as you see the hallmarks left by all the different eras Belgrade has lived through, oh...and excellent internet access makes this city a haven for digital nomads.
Firstly it’s pretty cheap to live there. Most digital nomads will be getting a lot for their money; the food is a lot cheaper for both eating out and buying groceries. Enjoying cultural experiences like going to the theatre become accessible again in this incredible city. As an added bonus, the Serbian people are wonderfully friendly and welcoming of foreigners so it’s so much easier to settle into the wider community.
I can’t think of a better recipe for a place that you could call home.
In the summertime, Belgrade really shows herself off which is why we’ve picked it for an August visit. Here are some things we’d definitely love to be doing whilst there:
Top 5 Bucketlist Items
- See a show at the National Theatre
- A night out on a Splavovi
- Visit St. Mark’s Church
- Walk the streets of the bohemian Skadarlija
- Stuff your face with traditional Serbian Cuisine

6. Malta
City Recommendation: Sliema
NomadList Rating: 3.42/5
Thousands of years of history. Empires that have risen and fallen. And yet, Malta’s beauty remains untainted. If you take your sassy self there in August, you can look forward to perfect beaches, blue skies, even bluer waters and a tan to rival anything that could come out of a bottle.
Food is my absolute life so believe me when I say Maltese cuisine will not disappoint. The history of Malta is weaved into the huge variety of food you’ll find on the island; you can guarantee there will be something for everyone. In addition to this, according to the show ‘The Crown’, the Queen of England loves it here. If it’s good enough for her, you can bet your bottom dollar it’ll be good enough for us.
For digital nomads, the best place to set up shop is in Sliema. There’s a great coworking scene and plenty of cafés so you can be productive. Lots of expats and fellow digital nomads means it should be easy to make new friends and internet access is not likely to be a bother. In short, Malta is pretty darn awesome.
Here’s some things we’d love to be doing:
Top 5 Bucket List
- Swim in the ‘Roman Baths’
- Hire a Self Drive Boat
- Go out to eat in St. Julian’s
- See a show in the Salesian Theatre
- Walk along the stunning Promenade

7. Hungary
City Recommendation: Budapest
NomadList Rating: 4.64/5
Budapest is one of the best cities to travel in August. The weather is great, there are a ton of things to do and it’s so easy to meet fantastic people. In August you can look forward to all kinds of festivals, including the famous Sziget Festival which brings huge artists together from all over the globe.
Explore ruin bars all across the city, dance the night away in some of the cities biggest clubs and eat your way around some delicious restaurants inspired by local tradition and other cuisines that reflect the diversity of the city’s population.
For digital nomads, there are so many cool places to work. You can work in cafes that are tucked away from the road, there are coworking spaces dotted everywhere or you’ll be able to work from your apartment. The internet connection is the stuff of digital nomad dreams with speeds hitting well over 100mbps…
...I can sense the swoon. Sometimes it can be a little glitchy but 9/10 you’ll be back online before you know it. Mobile data is also very reasonably priced and the overall cost of living for things like food and travel is really very good. As a Tribe we’ve been a few times and it’s always been a blast.
Here are some activities we’d highly recommend…
Top 5 Bucketlist
- Sziget Festival
- Visit a Ruin Bar...or 5
- Stuff your face at the Budapest Barbecue Company
- Get on the road to visit Lake Balaton
- Visit Fisherman’s Bastion

8. Kenya
City Recommendation: Nairobi
NomadList Rating: 3.3/5
Take a deep breath...and think of the Kenyan Plains. Incredible wildlife, beautiful people, and the magic of the Masaai Mara. Nairobi has all the modern convenience that city life offers. But its close proximity to some of the most epic natural phenomenons of all time gives you the best of both. It’s also so ram-packed full of adventurous things to do, you will be spoilt for choice.
Going to Kenya in August is going to be expensive. But it’s one of those experiences that you plan and save for. Why? The answer is that it will be one of the most iconic trips you will ever embark on in your life. So yes...it is absolutely worth it.
For digital nomads, your internet approach will probably require you get a SIM with data on it which should be pretty easy to find. Kenya has invested in rolling out fibre optic internet access across the nation. The coverage is not entirely complete but it will certainly make things a lot easier. In cities like Nairobi you shouldn’t have too many problems at all.
Here are some things we’d highly recommend doing.
Top 5 BucketList
- Watch the migration of the Majestic Wildebeest in The Mara
- Spend time with the Masaai Mara people
- Visit Giraffe Manor - (wake up to a beautiful giraffe saying hi)
- Take a raft up the River Tana
- Enjoy some of the delicious roasted meat - Nyama Choma

We’ve got 8 countries on this list so far which is barely scratching the surface so we’ll continue to update the list as time goes on. In the meantime, whilst we all sit indoors, we can dream, dream and dream some more.
See you in the next one…
