Introducing A New Tier: Price Changes at WiFi Tribe

Since the first days of the Tribe – just over two years ago – we wanted to figure out a way for us all to be able to live anywhere in the world, together. We loved the idea of having a place to stay wherever we dreamed of going, and an extended family that would make this house a home. Instead of committing to buying or renting a place that would tie us down to one little spot on this planet, we wanted to be able to live anywhere – freely moving in, or hopping out as-and-when we'd feel the itch to live somewhere ‘unknown'.

That dream is very much still alive. In fact, it’s stronger today than it ever was, because we now understand how possible this dreamy version of the future is.

However, we also know that we’ll have to change a few things along the way, to make sure we last the test of time. We’re not still here when so many other groups decided to shut down because we wanted to travel for a year or two. We’re still here because we firmly believe in a different way of living life. Luckily, so do you, and so do 300 fellow Tribers.

True to our mission, this year, we doubled the number of chapters to choose from – 25 chapters across 5 continents. We've started to add exciting new destinations to our selection of places to live (including many cities in Europe and Africa) and our plans for 2019 are even more ambitious. However, one of the things that we quickly came to realise was that in order to expand our choice of destinations, we would need to review our current pricing to make it work for places with radically different housing costs.

How does South America compare to Europe? How about Chiang Mai, Thailand to Tokyo, Japan? Or Mexico City to Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik?

Our answer to this challenge

To make it possible for us to keep adding new destinations, we are grouping countries into different pricing tiers:

  • Tier 1 countries will include our original, popular Central/South American and Asian destinations for 2018;

  • Tier 2 countries will include South Africa and our newly introduced European cities for 2018.

So… how will the price of a chapter change?

TIER 1 chapter changes

So, let’s start with the good news: the pricing for shared rooms in Tier 1 countries won’t change much, and for private rooms it won’t change at all.

The new pricing structure for chapters in this tier will be:

Chapters / year

1

2

3+

6+

Private Room: $1800 $1600 $1500 $1400
Shared Room: $1100 $1000 $950 $900

TIER 2 chapter changes

For all countries in Tier 2 – which at the moment includes most of Europe and South Africa – the pricing will be:

Chapters / year

1

2

3+

6+

Private Room: $2000 $1800 $1700 $1600
Shared Room: $1200 $1100 $1050 $1000

A new option to reserve ensuite private rooms

Some rooms are larger, some smaller; some have ensuite bathrooms, others share bathrooms. Who gets the ensuite bedroom? What fair rule can we agree on so that everyone is treated equally?

Our solution was to offer those Tribers who booked the earliest the chance to choose; first booked, first choice.

Now, we will be offering everyone who books a private room the option to reserve one of the ensuite bedrooms (depending on availability) for an additional $200 on any 4-week chapter. If any of the ensuite bedrooms are not reserved, the original first-booked-first-choice rule will kick in again, and those rooms will be assigned in order of booking.

How does this affect my current or future booking?

We’ve put in a lot of time and thought into figuring out how to introduce these changes in the fairest possible way. We decided that honouring all current bookings is the right way to go.

Current bookings are chapters for which you have officially made a reservation by asking us to apply one of your deposits (via email or Slack) to a specific chapter, and received a confirmation from us via email.

Here is a table that summarises which bookings will be affected by the new pricing, as of Friday June 1 2018:
