This Unplugged Snow Week has two slot options! Please select which week you'd like to join in the booking form.

We're heading to Japan, but this time, we're trading busy streets and lively cities for snow-filled slopes. This Winter season, we're calling Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort, one of Japan's oldest ski resorts, our playground.

With a world-class ski resort located close to the traditional Japanese village of Nozawa Onsen (famous for its hot springs), we'll have plenty of exciting activities to keep us busy all week long. Picture days skiing or snowboarding through fresh powder, evenings soaking in outdoor hot springs under falling snow, and nights tucking into some of the tastiest, authentic Japanese food.

Unplugged trips are all about taking intentional work breaks and spending our time off going on epic adventures. Expect the same fun-filled Chapter vibe, except there are no laptops in sight, your email notifications are off, you're hanging with your Tribe fam, and everyone's wearing animal onesies.

A snow week vacation featuring hot springs and sake? Let's go!

Japan is one of the most sought-after snow sports destinations in the world. With high-quality snow that falls regularly and in abundance in Nozawa Onsen, you're guaranteed incredible skiing and boarding conditions all throughout Snow Week.

I just loved being able to get to know new Tribers, banding together and dancing, eating together, and exploring together. Learning how to ski can be hard, so there is nothing better to have others hold you accountable and cheer you on! :) - Triber, Elektra, reflecting on her latest ski week

Reunite with the Old Pals in the Snow

With views of snow-capped mountains and frosty trees, the promise of warm baths waiting after a day in the snow, and incredible Japanese cuisine available for every meal, it's no wonder that Nozawa Onsen is a top choice for skiers and snowboarders. The ski resort itself is world-class. With 36 runs spread across the mountain, ranging from gentle groomed runs to challenging mogul fields, excellent snowfall, and legendary Japow, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

New to snow sports or not a fan? Each Snow Week, several Tribers who don't ski or snowboard join for the experience. Some are just learning to ski or snowboard, and others simply join for the vibes. There'll be plenty to do in Nozawa Onsen if you're not tearing up the slopes—sign up for a week-long wintery vaycay in a traditional Japanese village!

1. Hit the Slopes

With diverse terrain, we'll ride everything from perfectly groomed runs to untouched powder stashes hidden between the trees that'll get our adrenaline pumping.

2. Learn to Ski or Snowboard

Try your hand at snow sports on Nozawa's world-famous powder! Get expert lessons from local instructors and have your Tribe fam cheering you on!

3. Go 'Wow' for 'Japow'

Japan's legendary powder snow, known as "Japow," is light-as-air, dry, and incredible to ride. Experiencing the fluffy, pillowy softness of Japow is bucket-list worthy.

4. Soak in a Traditional Onsen

Nozawa has 13 onsens (public hot springs) in the village. Relax and unwind as you warm up after a day on the slopes, but remember to follow proper onsen etiquette.

5. Indulge in Delicious Food

There are loads of great food spots in the village! Warm up on hearty bowls of ramen, sip on sake, and head to a ryokan to experience a traditional kaiseki dinner.

6. Visit the Famous Snow Monkeys

Take a trip to Jigokudani Yaen-Koen or Snow Monkey Park to see wild Japanese macaques leisurely bathing in the natural hot springs.

Our Home in Nozawa Onsen

Our cozy coliving home is a dream! We'll be in one large house altogether, in a great location in the village of Nozawa Onsen. The location is exceptional, with ski-in convenience, and we're right next door to an onsen!

Highlights

Our Snow Week coliving home is a total dream!  We’ve got a cozy, self-contained mountain lodge in one of the best locations in Nozawa, and the views of the valley will have you snapping countless pics.

With ski-in access, spacious bedrooms, big shared spaces for Tribe hangs, and traditional Japanese rooms offering the quintessential Japan experience, what’s not to love?

Our coliving home is right next to an onsen (this location couldn’t be more perfect!) After a long day on the slopes, rest and unwind in the warm waters of the onsen.

The village of Nozawa Onsen has countless bars (izakayas) and restaurants, so we’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to meals. Fill up on traditional Japanese cuisine and sips of sake all week long. There are also a couple of great craft breweries in the village.

Good to Know

In Winter, restaurants in Nozawa Onsen tend to get busy. As we'll be in a larger group, making reservations beforehand will be essential.

Some restaurants operate on a cash-only basis, so keep some cash on hand.

The village streets can get icy. If possible, bring snow boots or similar footwear for walking around.

You can't go to Japan without relaxing in an onsen, but these public baths have strict rules that must be followed. Research onsen etiquette before you go, but generally, wash your body thoroughly before entering the water, and don't enter with clothing on.

If you have tattoos, onsens may be a bit of a challenge as some have strict rules around visible tattoos. When you arrive, walk around to see which onsens have strict tattoo policies and which don't, and consider bringing a rash vest or tattoo stickers/cover-ups.

Closest airport and transportation information

Closest airports: Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) or Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT).

From Tokyo, take the famous Shinkansen or the "Bullet Train" from Tokyo to Iiyama (around two hours), then, grab the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus to Nozawa (roughly 30 minutes). This is the fastest route.

You could also opt for a bus or coach ride, available from either airport in Tokyo. This trip takes around five and a half hours.

What kind of insurance do I need?

Whether you're an experienced rider or new to the slopes, consider travel insurance that includes added protection for adventure activities. Things like:

  • Trip protection against weather-related incidents that cause trip cancellations or delays
  • Gear protection to protect yourself against theft, lost or damaged equipment
  • Emergency medical insurance and emergency evacuation to cover any accidents on the slopes

What is Unplugged?

Unplugged adventures are about reuniting with old friends. It's a week-long intentional break from the day-to-day to disconnect from work and reconnect with the Tribe.

It's a chance for us to keep in touch with old friends a few times a year and stay plugged into the community, even when we're no longer fully nomadic and able to join month-long Chapters.

That's why, for these adventure weeks, we're looking for members who have joined Chapters before and intimately understand what being a Triber is all about.

Why did we choose skiing and snowboarding as a Unplugged adventure?

We're a group that loves to ski and snowboard, members have self organized their own ski weeks with fellow Tribers, so we want to help take it a step further. There's magic to renting out an entire chalet for cozy community hangs and bonding over a shared passion with people with whom we already feel close.

How is Unplugged different from a Chapter?

Chapters have a focus on productivity with the expectation that everyone will log on to work Monday-Friday. Unplugged is a time to... well, unplug.

Set up an out of office message and take off days from work, these week-long adventures are a holiday as a Tribe. We won't be working during the week, instead all of our focus will be on the adventure and the intention of getting even closer by sharing an epic experience.

Is there wifi at our accommodations?

Since this is a chance to unplug from our daily work schedules, we aren't specifically sourcing accommodations for their wifi reliability and speeds. We also won't have the backup MiFi devices on the ground or other supportive tech gear.

During this Unplugged adventure, our chalets do offer wifi but we suggest staying offline as much as possible to soak up the Unplugged vacation mode goodness!

Find answers about the resort and Chamonix below:

Which resorts are nearby? What are the difficulty levels?

The village of Nozawa Onsen sits at the base of the Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort, accessible via the resort's gondola and chairlift system. We'll spend our Snow Week exploring the various runs across the mountain.

Is a ski pass included in the Ski Week price?

No, a ski pass is not included in the trip price. Each member will likely have their own agenda during snow week. While some may take the first lift up, spend the entire day on the mountain, and be the last people down, others may wish to spend less time on the slopes, focus on learning, or relax completely in the village's famous hot springs. You could choose to purchase a Nozawa Onsen day pass, but opting for a multi-day pass is recommended as it gets you full access to all 36 runs across the mountain.

At present, the 2024-2025 prices for the passes are as follows:

  • ¥7,300 (1-day pass),
  • ¥ 19,700 (3-day pass)
  • Night skiing (available on select runs): ¥2,700 (single night)

More pricing information can be found on the official Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort website.

Can I rent equipment at the resort?

Yes, for convenience, there is a fully equipped gear rental store called Salomon Station near the Nagasaka gondola station. Other gear rental stores are listed here.

I don't want to ski or snowboard, can I still join the trip?

100%, yes! Even if you don't like snow sports and won't join us on the slopes, you're still going to have an absolutely smashing time in Nozawa Onsen. You can spend your time relaxing in the onsens, enjoy a tea ceremony at Zenkoji Temple, go on a cooking course and learn to make traditional Japanese food, take a trip to Joshin'etsu-kogen National Park, and much more! Honestly, even if you don't ski or snowboard, Nozawa Onsen is still a perfect location for a week-long vacation.
